Intellectual property law is made to protect the rights of the creator and owners of inventions, films, computer programmes, music etc. It is area of the law which are totally concerns with legal rights which are associated with commercial reputation or creative effort and goodwill. The subject matter of intellectual property is very wide and includes films, computer programmes, designs, inventions, literary and artistic works and marks used by traders for their goods and services. The law deters others from taking or copying unfair benefits of the work or reputation of another and provides remedies should this happen. Intellectual Property is intangible assets which we cannot touch, it is totally a creation of a mind. Their are several different forms of rights or areas of law giving rise to rights that together make up intellectual property. They are:
(a) trade libel
(b) registered designs
(c) patents
(d) copyright
(e) rights in performance
(f) the law of confidence
(g) design right
(h) trade marks
(i) passing off
This list is not holistic and there are many different rights also, for example, the rights associated with plant and seed varieties protection, etc.
